The Creation Story (Equipping Hour Outline)

 

1. Prologue & Summary Statement of the Creation of the Cosmos (v. 1:1)

[the heavens (space) and the earth in foundational form from nothing]

2. The State of the Earth in Foundational Form (v. 2)

(“formless and void” – “Unformed” & “Unfilled”)

3. Creation (Completion) – by the Power of God in His Word (vv. 3-31)

• The First Triad – “Forming” to finish the foundational form:

a. Day 1 (vv. 3-5)
i. Light (just “light” – no lights! God is the light source!)
  “Day” and “Night” – time began!

b. Day 2 (vv. 6-8)
i. Sky (“expanse” of atmosphere of separation)
ii. Waters (no land!)

c. Day 3 (vv. 9-13)
i. Dry land (“earth”)
ii. Seas (“gathering of the waters”)
iii. Vegetation (“plants yielding seed” & “trees bearing fruit”)

• The Second Triad – “Filling” to fill the foundational form:

d. Day 4 (vv. 14-19)
i. Lights (in the heavens or space)
  Two great lights – the Sun for day, the Moon for night, the stars
  For signs (constellations?), seasons, days, years
  To give light upon the earth

e. Day 5 (vv. 20-23)
i. Inhabitants – “living creatures”
ii. Birds (why were they first?)
iii. “Swarms” of fish and sea creatures

f. Day 6 (vv. 24-31)
i. “Living Creatures”
ii. Land animals – cattle, beasts, and every creeping thing
iii. Mankind – v. 26 has something new – “Let US!”
   (God begins to shift His creation story from a geocentric view to
   an anthropocentric view! More to come!)

4. Summary Statement on the Completion of Creation (v. 2:1)

“Thus, the heavens and the earth were completed, and all their hosts.”

5. Epilogue – Sabbath Rest of God – Day 7 (vv. 2:2-3)

6. Man’s Account of the Creation of the Earth and the Heavens (vv. 2:4-25)

Possibly written by Adam – “God” (Elohim) becomes the “LORD God” (YAHWEH Elohim). Perspective shifts from God alone to God and Man.
