Blessed Are the Meek: Equipping Hour Outline

1. What Meekness Is Not

Circle or cross out the false words that do not describe biblical meekness:

Weakness

Passivity

Cowardice

Timidity

Spinelessness

Being a doormat

People-pleasing

Lack of courage

Silence in the face of evil

Fear of conflict

Natural shyness

Indifference

True biblical meekness is not any of the words above. It is strength under control — a Spirit-produced grace that submits to God and responds to others with gentleness and restraint.

2. The Text

“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” — Matthew 5:5

3. Structure of the Passage

Jesus organizes this beatitude in two clear parts:
•      Character: “Blessed are the meek”
•      Promise: “for they shall inherit the earth”

This follows the same pattern as the surrounding beatitudes and sits between mourning (v. 4) and hunger for righteousness (v. 6).

4. Main Idea

Those who are meek (submissive to God and gentle toward others) are already blessed by God and will one day inherit the whole earth.

5. Gospel Connection

Jesus Himself is the perfectly Meek One (Matthew 11:29; 21:5). He submitted fully to the Father, bore injustice without retaliation, and through His death and resurrection secured the inheritance for all who trust in Him. Meekness is both a description of kingdom citizens and a gift that flows from union with the Meek King.

6. Key Takeaways

  1. True meekness is not a natural temperament; it is a grace / fruit of the Holy Spirit.
  2. Meekness toward God means submission to His will and flexibility / pliability to His Word.
  3. Meekness toward others involves:
    • Bearing injuries
    • Forgiving injuries
    • Returning good for evil
  4. The great promise is that the meek shall inherit the earth.
